Style Scribe – Skirting the issue

by Nikki Gotianse-Tan

Every so often, fashion chooses a worthy garment on which to train its creative juices on. This is a fixation that will last a season or two and before you know it, you’re faced with a full-blown sartorial obsession that will call on you to try it on for size. Recently, it has been skirts. These feminine bottoms have been taken for granted in the past and we didn’t see it beyond the denim mini or A-line floral. Now however, there are choices aplomb as fashion toys with skirts in a way that is absolutely stirring. From tailored pencil skirts to beautifully draped chiffon, it’s time we explore a little more of this hit below the belt:
1. Miss Secretary
If you didn’t think that provocative and proper could sit well side by side, you haven’t thought much of channeling a 50’s secretary. Look up Christina Hendricks’s character in Mad Men and you’ll know what I mean. If you haven’t seen the series yet, you should. Jon Hamm’s Don Draper aside, watch an episode or two to look into what the pencil skirt does for the series’ favorite vixen. This is a look that will keep you office-appropriate but at the same time take you to your night out with more colorful and less structured tops.
2. Bond Much?
One of the reasons why skirts have figured again so prominently in girls’ wardrobes nowadays can be attributed to the popularity of the tulip skirt. The separates sister of the bondage dress is not only more forgiving (especially when worn with a cropped top), it follows a lady’s shape and even adds to it by gathering you at the waist. Generally mid-length but also more thigh-grazing for some, this is where most of the draping happens.
3. Get Airy
In this turnabout of skirts, the fabrics are going in the direction of feather-light. Tulle, lace and chiffon are being used more and more to create a less fussy silhouette even if there is some layering going on. Pleats, these are not. Whereas the thicker fabrics of yesteryears complicated things and added bulk, these skirts made of gauzier stuff aim for a more deconstructed look that are all about letting loose and being less serious. This includes pairing romantic skirts with even the most basic tees in your closet or boxy, tailored shirts.
4. For the Prints-happy
Since skirts have invited color into fashion’s trendier looks, it was only logical that prints come to play an integral part. From the favored floral prints to artistic splatter, these are hardly for the classic at heart.  On the bright side, put this artsy twist into consideration if you favor basic shapes and don’t feel much like experimenting with shape variations and complicated hemline details.
