The Korean craze takes over Abreeza Mall

The Hallyu wave has definitely hit Davao, with locals clamoring for everything Korean—from food to fashion, from aesthetics to entertainment. With this in mind, Ayala Mall Abreeza heeded K-lovers’ call with a three-day Korean musical and cultural extravaganza dubbed Korean Dreamin’.

Korean Dreamin’ kicked off on August 2 with a showcase of Korea’s performing arts presented by the Asia Center for Intercultural Studies. A visiting Korean performing group presented their home country’s traditional and contemporary music, dances, and martial arts to champion their unique heritage and to promote cultural diversity and harmony in Davao.

On August 3, Korean classical musicians regaled Davaoeños in a delightful afternoon concert dubbed The Splendor of Music that was presented by the Phoenix Cultural Exchange Foundation, Inc. Taking their talents to the stage were tenor Song Tae Wang, pianist Kim Eun Hee, soprano Cho Mee Hai, saxophonist Park Soo Yong, jazz pianist Kang Yoon Sook, bassist Kim Sung Kwang, guitarist Lee Dae In, keyboardist Lee Sung Hwan, and drummer Kim Min Ho. Rounding out the illustrious lineup were two Filipino classical music greats, violinist Alfonso “Coke” Bolipata and pianist Najib Ismail, with Davaoeño architect Michael Dakudao as narrator.

Finally, drawing in droves of ecstatic K-pop fans was a mall show starring Kapuso oppas Alexander Lee and Marucci, collectively known as AXM, on August 4. Fans know Alexander Lee as Heart Evangelista’s leading man on the GMA TV series My Korean Jagiya, a South Korean singer, actor, and host who gained fame as a member of the K-pop boy band U-KISS. Making up the other half of this newly formed musical duo is Korean rapper and songwriter Marucci. Together, they sent the crowd into a frenzy with songs such as “My Jagiya,” the theme song from My Korean Jagiya, and their party-perfect new single “S.M.N.”
