After its huge win at the recent First Surigao International Dragon Boat Summer Festival last May 26, 2018, the Davao City-based Dragons Del Sur paddling team is now setting its sights on more chances to compete outside of the region.
Kampilan Dragon Boat has achieved a milestone in its more than three years of existence by bringing home a championship trophy after beating a highly competitive field comprised of teams from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, as well as from China, Malaysia , Canada and Hongkong,
Pio Capito Jr, member of Kampilan Dragon Boat said on Wednesday Habi at Kape media forum at Abreeza Mall that in Dragon Boat, sport is not only a skill of strength but also discipline, sacrifice and cooperation.
“One of the maxims that Kampilan Dragon boat maintains is ‘You either win or learn-you never lose’,” said Capito.
According to the members of Kampilan Dragon Boat what has kept them going despite disappointments was that they kept on they keep on learning, sometimes at a heavy price.
Capito said that they also narture team spirit and camaraderie as their top priority over the mad pursuit of recognition and hallow victories.
Capito said their training would consist only of land drills and stand-up paddling by the beach but the team finally decided that mandrills alone were no longer adequate and if they were to continue to pursue a paddling sport, they should have a boat.
“ 4 years months after that, and almost a year of land drills and stand-up paddling we were finally able to call our training- a dragon boat training,” said Capito.
