DATE 2018 to unveil new irrigation method

The Davao Agri-Trade Expo (DATE) 2018 will introduce a new method of irrigation  that would address the scarcity of water resources arising from to climate change, resulting to more efficient food production.

“We’re hoping to produce this technology and get many of our agri-business and entrepreneurs interested in the non-traditional growing method to address the challenges of climate change,” DATE Conference Director and Davao Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCII) Vice President John Carlo B. Tria said.

Rivuris, an Israeli agri-tech company, will introduce it on the Agribusiness Innovation Conference on September 21 at the SMX Convention Center.

Tria noted Rivuris’ expertise in irrigation considering Israel as a desert country.

“They have been successful in crowing crops amidst being a desert place,” He added. “Their expertise in getting the right irrigation is something we can all learn from.”

Tria opened up the decreasing durian production from last year due to El Niño, blaming it on the lack of irrigation.

“Last year, quality and quantity suffered up to 30% decrease due to droughts,” Tria said.

Meanwhile DCCCII President Arturo Milan wants the farm industry to shy away from the tradional farming, and adapt in the latest technology.

“We need to adapt in the latest technology. This is only way we can enhance productivity,” Milan said.

He believes the new method of irrigation will provide efficiency in the production side.

“There’s so much wastage in the tradition way,” Milan emphasized in the continuous usage of carabaos in tilling lands.
