Jet Engay of the Dona Pilar Chess Club, Restituto Sonsona of Davao and May Micayabas of the University of Mindanao bagged special awards in the Mati Open Rapid Chess Tournament last January 24.
Engay was the best youngest performer while Sonsona bagged the best senior player award with Micayabas coming home with the best female player award of the competition organized by the Mati Chess Club and backed by chess patron Dongdong Almario Jr.
National master Cedric Magno of Panabo won the open division with a better tie-break against fellow NM Alexander Lupian of Davao del Norte. Davao City’s Harrison Maamo placed third and NM Ferdinand Leysa of Gen.Santos City Chess Club landed in fourth place.

The Lady Knights and UP Mindanao Varsity squads share the top spot in the ongoing Acosta Cup at the Tionko field.
Both teams tallied six points after scoring two victories each.
Medvil Black trails in third place in the standings with three points after registering one victory.
Holy Child, Medvil Blue, Philippine Women’s College had one setback apiece while UP Alumni Football Club suffered two defeats in the tournament supported by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta, City Sports Development Division,  RDL Pharmaceutical Lab Inc., Jollibee JTC Davao, and MY Hotel.

The  2010 Tropang Growee Basketball Camp and 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will kick off on February 6 at the Sto. Rosario Gym in Buhangin, according to Rael Diaz of the organizing Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc.
Registration is free. Qualified to join are children from ages 8 to 12 years old only.
Entry forms are available at the office of Buhangin barangay secretary Nerissa Yu or Kagawad Roy Benitez from February 1 to 5.
