PH golfers strike in opening round

The Philippines opened its campaign in golf on a high note taking top 1 and 2 positions in women’s and men’s play on TUesday at The Mines Golf Resort and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur.

Lois Kaye Go fired a six under par 66 to pace the women’s competitions. She holds a three stroke lead over Malaysia’s Nur Durriyah who carded a 69 along with Thailand’s Thitapa Pakdeesetiakul. Another Malaysian Ashley Lau and Thai Attaya Thitikul had identical 70s.

In men’s play, Ruperto Zaragosa III, whose mpther Evelyn is a Dabawenya, fired a 8 under par 64 and even momentarily held on to the lead until Thailand’s Kammalas Namuangruk came in with a near perfect round of 63.

“I was playing well with my irons and putting today,” said Zaragosa in a message to Edge Davao.

Kosuke Hamamoto of Thailand is at third with a 67 alongside compatriot Witchayanon Chothirunrungrueng. Gregory Foo of Singapore had a 68.

The 54-hole tournament resumes today.
