National Team mainstays John Leerams Chicano and Ma.Claire Adorna ran a very tactical race on Sunday to rule a world-class field in the 2nd MusaMan TriDavNor triathlon in nearby Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
Chicano, who suits up for Team Go For Gold, cruised through the swim stage before taking over the reins from 2017 MusaMan TriDavNor champion Paul Jumamil halfway through the run phase to coast to victory at the tracks of the Davao del Norte Sports Complex where the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-km. bike and 10-km. run race ended.
In the distaff side, Adorna of ActiveHealth took the Elite Female title after clocking a fast 2:07:40 besting Fil-Am national team member and model Kim Kilgroe of De Rosa-Corsa who clocked 2:11:04 to finish second. Alexandra Ganzon of Team Black Arrow Express came in third in 2:27:25.
Chicano, the reigning Putrajaya Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) Middle Distance Duathlon Asian Championships winner negotiated the distance in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 3 seconds, beating Jumamil of the Tri-SND Barracuda by 1:07 minutes. ActiveHealth’s Mark Hosana settled for the third place clocking at 2:00:54.
“Sobra saya dahil first ako ngayon at masaya ako sa performance ko dahil nag-improve ako sa lahat ng phase ng race,” Chicano said, vowing to return next year to defend his title.
Chicano, now training under the watchful eyes of world-renowned Australian coach Brett Sutton, credited the win to his rigid training for the Southeast Asian Games in August. Sutton was the same coach who successfully steered Nicola Spirig to Olympic triathlon gold in London 2012 and silver in Rio de Janeiro 2016. Chicano hopes to capitalize on the training with Sutton to try to wrest the triathlon gold which he missed the last time out when he settled for the silver medal.
“Training lang talaga, kasi preparation namin para sa SEA Games,” Chicano said.
In the Team event, Vic Montebon led the Rider Omega Pro Tri Team to victory, while teammates Karen Indaya, Jessie Sanchez and Joseph Arnel Emia went on to scoop the Mix Relay.
The host squad of Eryk John Omandam, Albert Garciano and Elias Tabac prevailed in the Male Relay category, while Chyll Bea Amparo, Feliza Joy Abellana and Samantha Ashra Inoc secured the Female Relay.
Meeting the finishers at the Finish arc at the DavNor Sports Complex was Governor Anthony del Rosario who said he was impressed of the event’s turnout. Del Rosario said he hopes the field will increase next year on the 3rd MusaMan TriDavNor challenge.
A total of 472 triathletes participated in the competition, which is the first activity that highlighted the weeklong celebration of the 51st Araw ng Davao del Norte. The festivity is firmly supported by the Tagum Agricultural Development Company, Inc. (TADECO), Ulticon Builders, Inc. and MED 9, as the official anniversary partners.
Davao property firm Aeon Luxe, developer of the iconic Aeon Towers, also backed up the event.
