Magbanua saves day for DC chess team

TAGUM CITY– Just when it seemed everything was lost for Davao City in the 2019 Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg chess competitions, a 13-year old wiz came along to extend a winning run and prevent a shutout for his team.

Wesley Jovan Magbanua clinched the gold medal in the boy’s 13-14 years old standard division of boys chess on Friday at the Bulwagang Pangkarunungan Hall.

The promising standout of Jose Maria College (JMC), who is fresh from a gold and double bronze medal haul in last week’s Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa), emerged on top of the heap with 6.5 points in the 7-round Swiss system to stand tallest among 20 other contenders from all over Mindanao.

Magbanua reigned supreme over rivals Clyde Harris Saraos of Cagayan de Oro City and Aaron Noblijas of Zamboanga City, who tallied 5.5 and 5.0, respectively.

Saraos went home with a silver while Noblijas settled for bronze.

Magbanua, meanwhile, qualified for the National Finals of the centerpiece Philippine Sports Commission grassroots sports event slated this October.

Meantime, Magbanua will play the boy’s 13-15 years old blitz category on Saturday for a chance to fish another medal for Davao City. (Adam B. Morrell)
