TAGUM CITY—Davao City’s gold medal bid is over after a heartbreaking 15-25, 26-28 loss to Talaingod Municipality in the finals of the Batang Pinoy 2019 Mindanao Leg girls indoor volleyball competition held at the University of Mindanao (UM) Tagum Gym on Friday afternoon.
The DC squad’s unbeaten slate on its way to the finals didn’t matter anymore.

Almost unstoppable in the eliminations to the quarterfinals and  semifinals, Davao City which everyone thought was unbreakable suddenly brittled down on their face off with the shorter but meaner Talaingod.
Casting its powerhouse starters Rika Sasaki, Irina Glenne Escandor, Marianne Polancos, Allexa Mae Quilaton, Cahre Ishel Nablea and Jana Eadra Igna didn’t work for Davao City that was punished with consecutive kills in the first set.

Expecting they would retaliate in the second set, Talaingod always had answers to Davao City’s attacks. In fact, the latter’s bombs were more devastating.

A thrilling sequence in the second set, however, painted a picture on how Davao City fought their hearts out.

“Maraming errors tapos hindi maganda yung reception namin sa bola,” head coach Henry Labio said.

What the team lacks the most, according to Labio, was the power spikes. “Wala pa talaga kaming pamatay na palo kaya yun,” he added.

With a silver medal on hand, Davao City is still going to the National Finals on October. (Adam B. Morrell)
