Rivera inspires 1,300 SPES beneficiaries

Mayor Ronnel Rivera gave a pep talk to some 1,300 beneficiaries of the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) on Tuesday, April 3, at Oval Gym about the essence of manpower as the economic backbone of the city.

“Simula noong 10 years old ako, nagsimula ako mag summer job sa aming kompanya. Walang mintis yun. Lahat pinapatrabaho sa akin,” the Mayor started.

“Mula sa pagpili ng fishing nets hanggang sa pagbantay ng vault, natrabaho ko na yun. When I was given the opportunity to study in Cebu, yung pinagawa naman sa akin is pumunta ng ibang bansa para bumili ng barko. Kailangan ko pagaralan ang lahat kasi di pwede na maling barko at mabili,” he followed.

“Throughout my experience, I have realized the importance of manpower and labor. Most of the time, we see managers and presidents as the most of important persons in companies. Pero nagtratrabaho ako, na realize ko na yung mga rank-and-file personnel at laborers pala yung may malaking contribution,” said Rivera.

The Mayor then told that the beneficiaries of the SPES Program are lucky because they will be able to experience the “working world” even if they are still students.

“You have to take this opportunity to explore and understand how the government and private companies work. Not all teenagers that are at your age were able to get the chance to learn while earning,” Rivera emphasized.

“And who knows, some of you here will follow our steps. A few of here might become the future leaders of Gensan. We just don’t know but I am hopeful that it will happen,” he said.

The SPES Program is one of the annual programs of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). It is mandated under the Republic Act No. 7323.

Its aim is to give incentive to qualified students through temporary employment during summer or Christmas vacation. It is a 20-day employment service that will be rendered by individuals that are 15-25 years old.

The DOLE implements SPES through their partner local government units. The city government of Gensan, through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), opened the application for SPES in the first three months of 2018.

Around 400 students will be detailed in the different departments of the city government unit of Gensan. The remaining ones will be delegated to different private companies in the city, such as the KCC Mall of Gensan.

They will start working on April 10, Tuesday. They will work under the standard working schedule 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday – Friday.

Their salary will be both shouldered by the DOLE and their employers. The 60% of the salary will be given by the DOLE while the 40% is from the company in which the students are employed. (CPIO/ IJML/RSC)
