PBGEA: Remembering the past

The Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) says that from 2007 to 2011, their fresh banana markets in Russia, Singapore and China had been increasing.
Statistics show that the volume of exported fresh bananas to Russia increased to 2,040,461 boxes (13 kilograms each box) in 2011 from 1,249,307 in 2007.
In 2008, the export volume decreased to 959,000 boxes but went up to 1,197,307 boxes in 2009.
The Singapore export volume increased to 1,487,538 boxes in 2011 from 844,076 boxes in 2007.
The volume of exported bananas to China increased to 23,735,153 boxes from 16,028,769 boxes in 2007.
The PBGEA’s Dole-Stanfilco, Lapanday, Tadeco, and Hijo Resources supply fresh bananas to these three countries.
The NEH Philippines and Sumifru-Phils supply to Russia and China, while La Frutera, Alip River, Dizon Group, AMS Farming, Marsman, and Unifrutti are all suppliers of China.
There was also an increase in export volume in Hong Kong from 3,674,769 boxes in 2007 to 4,423,079 in 2011.
Volume exported to New Zealand increased to 3,862,384 boxes in 2010 from 3,680,538 boxes in 2007 however it decreased to 3,591,846 boxes in 2011.
In 2007, the Korea export volume was 20,215,846 boxes, which increased to 20,883,615 boxes in 2010, and decreased to 19,493,153 boxes in 2011.
Zero volume
PBGEA’s export volume of fresh banana turned to zero in the first quarter of 2012 in Syria with 931 MT in 2009 to zero since 2010.
Other countries where PBGEA had zero volume of export banana in the first quarter of 2012 include Turkey with 22 MT in 2009; Brunei with two metric tons in 2008; Italy with 14 MT in 2008.
Egypt export volume also was zero in the first quarter from 1,619 MT in 2011; Palau from seven MT in 2007; Thailand with 43 MT in 2011; the United Kingdom with 412 MT in 2011; and, Vietnam with 228 MT in 2011.
