The Sandiganbayan has allowed South Cotabato (1st District) Rep. Pedro Acharon, Jr. to travel to Osaka, Japan and join his wife in a dental profession-related tour.
In the minutes of the Sandiganbayan Seventh Division’s proceedings dated June 30, 2017, the anti-graft court granted the motion of Acharon to travel from July 17 to 21, 2017 for the tour organized by RM Dental Laboratory and Supply which distributes dental supplies to his wife, Dr. Rosalinda Acharon.
The Sandiganbayan ruled that the P30,000 travel bond posted by Acharon in March 2014 will guarantee his compliance to the terms and conditions of his travel.
The South Cotabato lawmaker was also required to present himself in person to the Sandiganbayan Seventh Division Clerk of Court within a period of five days upon his return from Japan.
Prosecutors of the Office of the Ombudsman (Ombudsman) had earlier opposed the motion of Acharon, arguing that there was no necessity on his part to attend dental profession-related tour.
Ombudsman prosecutors added that Acharon, being an incumbent representative, was unable to present proof that House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez gave him the authority to travel.
Acharon is facing graft charges for his alleged failure to liquidate P2.5 million meant for the participation of 37 delegates to the Pagana Dinner Show and Tambayayong Festival in Los Angeles, California in 2006 when he was the mayor of General Santos City. (PTR/PNA)
