The proposal of the China Town Development Council to develop an open space in the vicinity of China town was approved on Wednesday by the Davao City Parks Board.
This park will feature the wishing tree requested by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
The project has an estimated budget of 1.5 million pesos to include the beautification of the park with the putting up of benches and fences. The project’s construction will start on March and the unveiling will be in August in time for Kadayawan Festival.
“This is one of our efforts to rejuvenate our China Town, we will look into all the open spaces in China town and develop it into mini parks for our residents and tourists to enjoy the area,” said said Steve Arquiza, member of China Town Development Council during the Ispeak media forum at Davao City Hall on Thursday.
This park will be located in the junction of Leon Garcia St and Ramon Magsaysay Street. The park is 168 square meters big and will be developed by the private sectors from China Town.
“The city architect approved the open space outside the Magsaysay Park. The island near the friendship arch entry gate going inside Uyanguren Street is the seen available space that will situate our wishing tree,” he said
The wishing tree will not be an actual tree but an artificial tree with golden leaves and it will be two feet tall.
“We will use an artificial tree for this project because if we use a real tree it might be tampered due to the number of visitors,” he said.
Meanwhile, they are eyeing a small part of Alvarez St which is near the park to be developed into a Chinese street food night market.
“This street is rarely-used and we want to develop it as well in order for it to be more festive and well lighted street,” he said.
He said that this will be quite similar to Roxas Street market and the only difference is this will be a Chinese themed street food market.
“We will look into that and settle the mechanics with the city government and we are hoping to make this happen within the year,” he said.
