Negotiations for the opening up of direct flights between Japan and Davao City may be wrapped up before Kadayawan Festival in August.
“Japan is really aggressive in coming to Davao as well as in promoting Davao to Japan,” said Arturo Milan, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc (DCCCII) president during the weekly during the Habi at Kape press conference at Abreeza Ayala Malls on Wednesday.
“Our Japanese counterparts in the tourism industry are very much interested as we are in opening up a direct flight from Davao to Japan,” he said. “Any destination is acceptable to them and they wanted it to be done before the Kadayawan Festival,” he added.
He said that they are really on the time table and aggressive in a bid to establish a direct flight.
He said that they have been talking with the local Japanese group and that the Japanese tourism board will be joining their next meeting.
He said the likely places where the direct flights may land in Japan are in Tokyo, Haneda and Nagoya. “But it is still under negotiation because it will depend on the airline if it is interested.”
“The airline also has their landing rights,” he said.
When asked about the capacity of the airport to accommodate the tourist that will be coming in the city, he said that with these direct flights the government will be influenced to improve the facilities of the airport.
“I guess they are now already considering, soon to be bided out the terminal expansion project of the Davao International Airport,” he said.
