LGUs pressed to hire environment officers

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has proposed to make mandatory the hiring of environmental officers in all municipalities in the country.

“I think we will be having a better Philippines if we have a mandatory environmental office for each local government unit,” said DENR Secretary Roy Agullana Cimatu during his speech at the Philippine League of Local Environment and Natural Resources Officers national convention at The Ritz Hotel on Friday.

He said that he will be persistent in bringing this matter to Congress. “This is  because almost always a politician will ask how come there are problems regarding the environment in the locality.”

Addressing politicians, he said that if they want to have a better environment, they should amend the law and make the hiring of environment officers mandatory,” he added

He emphasized that he will be pushing for this proposal because he heard the call of the environmental officers during the PLLENRO national convention.

He said the DENR is not always everywhere and it needs help from the municipalities.

He said that not all municipalities have environmental officers that is why there was a proposal to make mandatory for every municipality to hire an environmental officer.

Making the environmental officers regular employees is also put into consideration during the amendment in the local government code.

“I am not able to find out how many environmental officers are present but I must say that is around 50 to 60 percent municipalities have officers,” he added.
