Police operatives in Mati City, Davao Oriental seized illegal drugs, paraphernalia and grenade inside a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) belonging to a fellow member of the Philippine National Police but the suspect managed to evade arrest Wednesday afternoon.
Davao Oriental Police Provincial Office – Police Community Relations (DOPPO – PCR) chief Supt. Ariel Nueva identified the erring police officer as PO 2 Luis P. Gabrinao Jr. who was assigned at the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) Police Station.
Nueva said the suspect has been identified through his passport left inside his car.
He said the SUV of Gabrinao was spotted using a fake plate number by the operating team during the conduct of OPLAN Davao Oriental Kalinaw at around 3:30 p.m of November 28 along Rizal Street, Barangay Central in Mati City.
The Mati police operatives made the search on the vehicle after receiving report from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) hotline 2600 about the car’s suspected counterfeit plate number “PKD 634.” He said the vehicle was followed by the operatives but Gabrinao sped off towards Lawaan Street in the said barangay, he left his car and ran away to an unknown direction.
Nueva said the team checked Gabrinao’s car and seized a fragmentation grenade, a sachet of metamphetamine hydrochloride known as shabu, two empty sachets with shabu residue, electronic pocket weighing scale, wooden pipe used for puffing marijuana and many more.
He said a followup operation has been launched for the arrest of Gabrinao preparatory to the filing of charges against him for violations of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and RA 9516 the Unlawful Manufacture, Sales, Acquisition, Disposition, Importation or Possession of an Explosive or Incendiary Device.
Earlier in November, 2014, Gabrinao was relieved by former Davao City Police Office (DCPO) director and now Manila Police District director Sr. Supt. Vicente Danao Jr. from assignment in Toril Police Station for his alleged involvement in illegal drugs activity in the area.
This after Supt. Hamlet Lerios, the station commander that time, discovered that the erring cop sent a text message to a suspected drug lord who is the subject of a failed drug-bust operation.
The operation failed to arrest the drug suspect after he managed to escape the area allegedly because of a information tip of Gabrinao.
Gabrinao’s case happened hours after another police officer of the region was arrested by a team of National Bureau of Investigation-Special Task Force for alleged involvement in the clandestine trade of selling parts of explosives in Compostela Valley province. The police officer was identified as PO2 Glenn Magalso belonging to the Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office.
Magalso was arrested in Nabunturan, ComVal Province by the NBI-STF team while dealing with one of his alleged runners, one Felix Alleria, who was asked by the investigators to invite the suspect to get the marked money from him in supposed payment for explosives parts used to manufacture bombs.
According to Chief Supt. Marcelo Morales , director of Police Regional Office 11, Magalso will be facing criminal charges for violations of Republic Act 9516 or he Unlawful Manufacture, Sale, Acquisition, Disposition, Importation or Possession of an Explosive or Incendiary Device.
