Museo de AMYA Honors 10th City Council

With the recent opening of Museo de AMYA, AMYA Foundation, Inc opened a door full of opportunities for Dabawenyos to learn and imbibe the city’s history. Poised to honor the many accomplishments of its founder, the late Dr. Aurea A. Mercado, today, the Museo remembers how their building was once used as a session hall and office of the Davao City Council once upon a time in the 90s.

Dr. Aurea A. Mercado was known for her excellent academic programs in the mid-80s. She was a recipient of the Balik Scientist Program of then Pres. Fidel V. Ramos. When she returned to the Philippines, she then decided to establish the Casa Mercado Early Childhood Enrichment Center, which later became the Casa Mercado Teacher’s College along Tulip Drive, Davao City.

For a span of time, her building was used as a temporary office of the City Vice Mayor and members of the City Council. They then conducted their weekly council sessions while the Sangguniang Panlungsod building (along Magallanes street) underwent construction.

AMYA President Leonilo G. Claudio revealed that from 1993 to 1996, a portion of Casa Mercado was leased to the City Government as temporary offices of the legislative branch.

Led by then Vice Mayor Luis C. Bonguyan, the transfer further allowed them to continue holding office and conduct regular sessions while the SP building was undergoing renovation. Said renovation was funded by a loan amounting to P150 Million from the Philippine National Bank (PNB).

Today, AMYA Foundation’s Board of Trustees dedicated a special corner at the Museo de AMYA to honor our legislators of the 10th City Council for their devotion to duty and service.

Showcased pieces includes a list of legislation and resolutions passed from 1993-1996, memorabilias and photos. The display was set to highlight legislative accomplishments that made a difference in today’s legislative scene.

Aside from the unveiling, the Board of Trustees announced that soon an AMYA Polytechnic College will rise and further what Dr. Aurea A. Mercado started. Details soon to follow.

Present during the unveiling were Hon. Pilar C. Braga, AMYA President Leonilo G. Claudio, Museo de Amya Board of Trustees, officers, members, friends and individuals from the media and society pages.

Museo de Amya houses a number of memories depicting the contributions made by Dr. Mercado as a dedicated educator and philanthropist.

Museo de AMYA is located at the 2nd floor, AMYA building, Tulip Drive corner Quimpo blvd., Ecoland, Davao City
