Expat – Do you enjoy floods?

by Klaus Doring

My column this week may sound like a “curtain-lecture”. It might sound as a “love’s labour lost”… “Much ado about nothing” Really?
As Th. Campbell said in his “Lochiel’s Warning”, “Coming events cast their shadows before”.
You can’t go home again! We all have no choice except to say: NO to floods! Prevention is indeed better than cure. And, let’s face it, if we don’t try to alter our lifestyles today, we may once again come face to face with the disastrous effects of typhoons like Ondoy, Peping  and many others.
There are only a few things that we should follow and take care off in future.
Much effort has already been undertaken regarding the issue by our local and national governments to segregate wastes properly. But we really don’t seem to learn. It really hurts!!! We are enthusiastic at the beginning, but give up halfway. Why guys??? We really don’t need extremely high-tech equipment or an ultra-sophisticated segregation method to do this.
Why is indiscriminate dumping one of the causes of flash floods? Look at the river in YOUR neighbourhood!  I really feel pain!
Most of our drainage systems are also clogged by wastes of different kinds, rendering them useless. Gosh, I am sure, you’re not expecting my real opinion here!
Guys, try to be “intelligent consumers”, meaning to say: we must be conscious of the products we consume and where they will go after we are done using them. Of course, we have the right to choose what we buy, and sticking to the products that have less packaging or buying in bulk can significantly lower the amount of garbage our households produce.
Should I remind each one of us should revitalize our forests? Should  I remindr each one of us, especially our newly-elected politcians, to plan our cities carefully? Should I remind each of us, and OF COURSE our newly-elected politicians to avoid constructions along coastal areas?
Natural disasters indeed occur all the time. We really have no control over our beloved Mother Nature, which is suffering more and more because of US. We should take more time to be prepared for the coming natural disaster. We, and all the people in our surroundings!

Great Britain moves to impose a 5% reduction in new NON-European Union immigrations to avoid (?) a last-minute surge ahead of a permanent reduction set to come into force next year. Is this the ultimate help of solving the national (European) financial crisis? I am pretty sure, it’s not!
Thousands of G-20 protesters marched through Toronto,Canada. Thousands ONLY? Amazing. Several hundred clashed with police, setting cars ablaze. World leaders continue recovery talks. So far so good. But I am afraid these talks will not “change the world and its economic problems”. It’s distressing, indeed.
