EDITORIAL: Leaving no stone unturned

Davao City is high on preparations for the upcoming Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) meet on February 17 to 23.

For decades, the Department of Education (Deped) which runs the regional sports conclave as a prelude to the Palarong Pambansa, has avoided the City as host for lack of standard sports facilities. Ironically, Davao City is considered the main hub of the region but without decent venues, Deped had to bring the annual games elsewhere in the other Davao cities and towns which have better facilities.

This year marks the return of the regional sports meet to the regional capital and the city government is making sure it will be a remarkable one. University of Mindanao’s new sports complex will be the main venue of the week-long meet.

The bigger preparations though are in the non-sporting areas like accommodations and security. These are the areas where the city would like to ensure the guests will feel secured and well looked after.

For example, it has purchased sleeping cushions and installed showers in billeting schools. It also ensured functional toilets and waste disposal systems.

The DAVRAA will serve as a learning process for the city to gear up for the bigger events up ahead like the Palarong Pambansa which it has long vied to host.
