Expecting dwindling water resources caused by El Niño, the agriculture sector now sees the need for processing plants to put up a catch water system to be used for irrigation.
Agri Davao president Adolfo Canete told Davao media at the Kapihan sa Dabaw press forum recently that Dabawenyos shouldn’t be complacent about their rich and abundant water in the city.
He said that water may be abundant these days, but everyone should prepare for the possibilities when El Nino strikes.
One sector that will be hit hard by this phenomenon is agriculture. This early, Agri Davao is pushing for an active involvement of processing companies in the instalation of a catch water system such that can also be utilized for irrigation purposes.
The agriculture group lauded the city council for approving the rainwater catchment ordinance mandating all households, establishments and buildings to have a rainwater catchment system.
The council is presently drafting the implementing rules and regulations for this particular city ordinance.
Councilor Leonardo Avila, the author of the ordinance and environment advocate, said savings by each household could reach up to P5,000 by being able to re-use water for washing clothes, cars, and other activities at home.
The rainwater catchment system is based on the collection of rainwater and gravity flow pressure principles. Rainwater runs off the roof of the house into rain gutters. The gutters channel the water and empty it into a standpipe and thence to a large receptacle. [PIA 11]
