The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) is urging the government to look into the declining number of agriculture graduates and other economic problems besetting the Davao region.
Dr. Ma. Lourdes G. Monteverde, DCCCII president, said the declining number of agriculture graduates must be looked into in the region, being an agri-based economy.
Monteverde said the absence of economic zones is another problem that must be addressed the soonest possible time, adding that by strengthening public-private partnership, the region’s economic potentials will be unleashed.
She also cited various economic opportunities in the region that stakeholders can tap. To help in the improvement of Davao products, standard guidelines must be drafted alongside the launching of the Davao Seal of Excellence.
Monteverde enumerated the production and processing of bio-fuels, feeds, organic fertilizers, and other agricultural or fishery products; alternative power generation using environment-friendly technologies; build-operate-transfer (BOT) projects and contractual joint ventures with the government; development of hotels, resorts, and retirement villages and the production of health care and wellness items to promote medical tourism; mining, quarrying and exploration and development of mineral resources; non-traditional export-oriented business; information technology-enabled business process outsourcing industry; and office and residential property development and public infrastructure construction.
She said that in unleashing the full economic potential of the region, stakeholders must recognize the opportunities present in the area. [Jenny Grace M. Mendoza/PNA]
