The Gospel of Hope – A question of trust

by  Rev. Dr. Mariano C. Apilado

Looking forward to the presidential election in May, I believe Election 2010 is essentially a question of trust.
Voters are entitled to answers to be taken seriously, especially on the following questions of trust.
How much can Manny Villar be trusted to rid our people of their poverty, given his slogan sipag at tiyaga and his having risen from the world of poverty to the world of power and affluence?
How much can Noynoy Aquino be trusted to go beyond the shadow of his parents and be his own man if he is elected president, with his promise to rid our country of poverty, and our government of corruption?
How much can Gibo Teodoro be trusted to dis-engage himself from his world of the rich and powerful, and then go to the poor through galing at talino and then Filipinos can rise from their poverty?
How much can Eddie Villanueva be trusted to utilize his avowed moral Christian values so that he can effect Bangon Filipinas?
How much can Dick Gordon be trusted to transform his friends and the Filipino so that the poor can overcome their poverty and transform the Philippines into a country where equitable distribution of wealth can be assured?
How much can Erap Estrada be trusted to really utilize his charms and his power to provide ginhawa to the mahirap in the cities’ informal settlements and the countryside’s formal settlers?
How much can the Filipino voter be trusted to participate in, and protect, elections so that they can truly be described as clean, honest and a genuine  expression of the people’s will?
How much can you, dear reader, be trusted to use your character and person so that we can work together, bayanihan style, to address our needs as a country and people to ensure that we can proceed to improve our lives as a people and our situation as a country?
Yes, all these indicate that Election 2010 is essentially a  question of trust.
