Northpoint’s Manila Sound Project concert features Parsons of Hagibis

As an all-male band of grown up men who spiced up their singing with dancing during live concerts, Hagibis and their music style caught the attention of people from all ages and walks of life. Often called a parody of the Village People, this 70’s hitmaker remains today as one of the icons of the Manila Sound genre.
Hagibis appealed to many Filipinos, catapulting them to the top of the charts in the 70s. Perhaps it’s the total package – their muscular look, the manly sound of their music, and equally masculine dance moves – that sets them apart from other singing groups.
But perhaps the most likely reason is the fact that the songs of Hagibis brought smiles to Filipino faces, especially during Martial Law when they first became popular.  In fact, they were called one of the bright spots in Filipinos’ lives during that dark period, when there was not much to smile about.
Who can forget the lines “Legs legs legs mo ay nakakasilaw. Legs legs legs mo ay nakakatunaw” from one of their original hits aptly titled “Legs”? In “Katawan”, Hagibis sings about the appeal of a woman’s curves, while “Lalake” is about how men are inevitably attracted to beautiful women. Obviously their songs mainly center on female beauty and male’s predilection for this.
With the revival of the Manila Sound in recent years, Hagibis joins other fellow icons of this genre that are currently playing at bars and shows in Metro Manila. Davao will get its turn on November 27 at 8 p.m. when Sonny Parsons of Hagibis performs with Rene Garcia of The Hotdogs, Male Rigor of VST & Co., and Maso Diez of Spirit of 67 in the “Manila Sound Project” concert at the city’s emerging entertainment hotspot, Camella Northpoint.
