Flashback to the 70’s. The airwaves were ruled by the music of the Manila Sound genre to which hits such as Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko, Disco Fever, and Rock Baby, Rock belong. These were some of the country’s most popular songs by hit maker VST & Co.
Among the many bands that rose to fame in the 70’s, VST & Co. was considered the pioneer of the Manila sound. It shared the airwaves with other popular bands—like The Hotdogs, The Boyfriends, and Hagibis—that had the same musical style that Filipinos loved at the time.
It was a love affair that proved the test of time, as these bands are now enjoying a successful comeback. And why not? Their music is as engaging now as when they first became hits thirty years ago. Songs such as Swing It, Baby and Magsayawan – some of the staple music of the disco fever that gripped the 70s to early 80s – still make Filipinos break into a nostalgic dance.
VST & Co. employed a mix of English and Filipino lyrics and came up with disco music widely accepted by listeners and heard in almost all discotheques in the 70’s. Who can forget that catchy tune of I-Swing Mo Ako and Sumayaw, Sumunod that make us dance and bring us fond memories of the golden years of the 70s?
Proving their versatility, VST & Co. churned out music that catered not only to the disco fever. They have a whole repertoire of love songs with lyrics so close to home and melody so unforgettable they can still be sang today among the new generation love songs. One is Ipagpatawad Mo that catapulted Janno Gibbs to fame when he reprised the song over a decade later.
As a hit maker, VST & Co. gave us songs that are still unrivalled today. Now, Dabawenyos will have the rare opportunity to hear these hits once again in the Manila Sound Project concert featuring VST & Co., The Hotdogs, Hagibis, and the Spirit of 67.
