Smart build secondary network to handle more calls and texts

Smart Communications Inc. on Wednesday said its secondary networks can handle the anticipated surge of call and text messages this year because of new promos.
In a statement, Smart said it launched the industry’s lowest priced unlimited call and text packages through Red Mobile brand to gain more market share in the “unli” services.
Red Mobile’s two new service packages are called “unli 4” and “unli 8.”
Danilo J. Mojica, head of Smart’s Wireless Consumer Division, said Red mobile runs on a network that has the reach and capacity to offer unli calls and texts, with the superior call quality and coverage offered by Smart’s nationwidest mobile network.
“Unli 4 and Unli 8 offer the best combination of value and quality available in the market,” he added.
Smart said there is no minimum load maintaining balance to continue using either of the two offers.
Red mobile is running on a mobile network that Smart has dedicated to handle unli voice call and text messaging services.
Developing this ‘unli’ network accounted for a significant portion of Smart’s network investments in 2009 and 2010.
In the first nine months of last year, Smart spent P9.12 billion to build a secondary network for unlimited services.
“We have implemented this network strategy so that we can address the demand for flat-rate and bucket services while maintaining overall network quality levels,” Mojica said.
Mojica added that its network was designed to accomodate the expected higher volume of calls and text messages this year.
“We expect voice call usage to continue growing in 2011 and red mobile will certainly contribute to that,” Mojica said.
Smart’s domestic voice call traffic surge by 140 percent in the first three quarters of 2010, driven by the increased unli and bucket voice offers of its brands Smart Buddy, Talk ‘N Text, and red mobile.
That surge in voice minutes pulled up the contribution of voice to total revenues from 43 percent to 49 percent, higher than the 48 percent contribution of SMS.
In a separate statement, Globe Telecom announced the return of its Superunli promos which allow prepaid subscribers to make unlimited calls and texts to all Globe, Touch Mobile and Tattoo users. [PNA]
The promo comes in two variants: a daily all-you-can call and text service for P25; and a weekly offer for P150.
“Making these promos available again is our simple New Year’s gift to our subscribers because of their continued loyalty and patronage to our offers,” Cathy Santamaria, head of Globe Prepaid, said.
“With Globe Superunli, our subscribers enjoy unlimited ways to stay in touch with their respective circles their way, may it be calling or sending text messages,” she added. [PNA]
