Davao will soon have its version of an education summit similar to the summits held in Tiwi and Ligao City, Albay as the Ayala Foundation works with the city government to push for the Davao leg.
The planned education summit targets to gather at least 250 participants from various sectors in the community like youth, school heads, religious sector, business sector and others.
Just like the summit in Tiwi and Ligao, Davao was also chosen to gather stakeholders who will identify pressing problems in the education sector, draw up plans that will have specific solutions to these problems with the intervention of the city government and the Department of Education.
Ayala Foundation senior manager for Education and Leadership Development Archimedes G. Velasco initially bared details of the planned summit with the University of Mindanao as the venue of the event and the commitment of the city government to support the summit.
This summit is part of Ayala Foundation’s newest education initiative called “Enabling Education Communities” which taps the participation of the community to plan, act, and solve existing problems in education.
Ayala Foundation has left a significant mark with its previous program GILAS or Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students which provided computers and internet to public high schools and disseminating Math, Science, and English video materials through mobile technology.
“The foundation has seen the need to broaden community participation because if there will be no ownership, the benefits left off by the internet literacy program won’t be sustainable,” said Velasco.
The summit aims to produce a one-year plan consisting of a few focused interventions with measurable results aimed at helping the multi-stakeholder group achieve quick victories.
Velasco said the Ayala Foundation will also assist the multi-stakeholder core group package attractive project proposals that will help find funding to realize their targets. [PIA 11]
