A total of 13 sports events will be staged in the city in line with the holding of the first Davao Summer Festival from April 29 to May 19.
City tourism officer Jason Magnaye said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw held Monday at SM City Davao that it is the city’s big move to invite more visitors by way of holding sports events here.
“This Summerfest is a partnership of the city government and the private sector, specifically the different sports organizations which earlier scheduled their competitions and shows in time for the Summerfest period,” Magnaye said.
Even with the lack of a sports complex, the city official explained that Davao has existing wide open spaces which can be used as venues for the sports events.
From football to a celebrity adventure challenge, all these are set to be held in the city this summer.
A horse show and competition is set on April 29 to May 1 at the Davao Riverfront, Maa. Spectators may also enjoy watching beach volleyball events on May 6 to May 8 at Seawall, Matina Aplaya. Other events include Frisbee competition, mountain biking, triathlon, judo, wakeboarding, marathon and football.
Organizers said the football games will be the main highlight of the sporting events when they feature the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Suzuki U23 Mindanao Championship on April 28 to 30.
Magnaye added that the city is currently maximizing the use of existing sports sites, although it hopes to discover other potential sites and develop them when the city stages the Summerfest next year. [PIA 11]
