Knowing how every home electrical device adds up to the total energy consumption is the first step towards energy savings.
Davao Light offers the following tips in estimating your monthly use of power:
1-Determine the amount of power required to operate an individual home appliance known as the wattage rating. You may refer to supplier’s manual or check the label which is usually found at the back or bottom of the unit.
2-Keep tab of the length of time each appliance set is used on a daily basis.
3-Calculate the power usage for each fixture using this basic formula: (Wattage Rate) / 1,000 = Kilowatt-hours (kWh) x number of hours use per day x 30 days
Example for Airconditioning unit (2 HP) = 1,420 W
Step 1: 1,420 W / 1,000 = 1.42 kWh
Step 2: 1.42 kWh x 10 hrs = 14.20 kWh per day
Step 3: 14.20 kWh x 30 days = 426 kWh per month
When an appliance is not in use it would be wise to unplug the cord as unit even in its standby mode still consumes electricity albeit in little amount.
With the growing awareness on the global warming effects, every contribution by any person to curtail carbon emissions would be valuable. Cutting down on energy usage at home is one such option available to everyone.
Bringing your electricity usage down not only helps you free up some money intended for electric bills but you also contribute in curbing carbon footprint.
