Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints rendered free service in Teofilo V. Fernandez Elementary School in Brgy. Indangan, Davao City last April 23. Dubbed as the 2011 National Day of Service, members of the Buhangin congregation of the church, in their bright yellow Helping Hands vests, repainted the school building. Aside from the repainting job, members also repaired and refurbished the classroom chairs. The school grounds were also cleaned up for the coming school opening.
The National Day of Service was in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th founding anniversary of the Church in the Philippines. This yearly tradition started in 1997 when each Church congregation rendered 150 hours of service worldwide to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Mormon pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley Utah, USA. The Church also has been supporting the Brigada Eskuwela (adopt- a-school), the cleaning and beautification of parks and other historical sites as well as support for the celebration of Earth Day.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always emphasized to its members the importance of service. “What a most appropriate way to express our gratitude to the Filipino people for warmly welcoming the Church to this country 50 years ago!” remarked Elder Keith R. Edwards, Philippines Area President, as he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to reach out to the community in celebration of the Church’s jubilee. “The Filipino Latter-day Saints are mindful of the Savior, Jesus Christ’s, teachings to be of service to our fellowmen,” he added.
Teofilo V. Fernandez Elementary School granted the Church permission to use one of its classrooms every Sunday to conduct a special sacrament service. The grant favored the members residing in Brgy. Indangan since they don’t have to spend any amount to attend the nearest chapel located in San Pedro Village, Buhangin. One way fare from Brgy. Indangan to Buhangin Proper costs 20 pesos. (PR)
