EDITORIAL: Stubborn abominable crime

Despite the controversial war waged relentlessly by the Duterte government from Day 1 in office, drug-trafficking continues to be one of the most stubborn crimes in the country today.

This is evidenced by the almost daily busts made by the military and the Philippine National Police (PNP) aided by the equally-energetic Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), in many places in the country.

Of course, the multi-billion peso smuggling of illegal drugs through the country’s shipping ports have decreased in number and frequency. Coupled with the neutralization of countless drug personalities, including so-called narco politicians, there is no doubt that the war on drugs, despite the controversies attached to the way the war has been implemented by some irresponsible enforcers, has achieved a measure of success.

But as said earlier, the incorrigibles have persisted in their involvement in the crime.

We think that the 2022 national elections should take up the drug problem as an issue. The people, especially those whose lives have been destroyed by drug addiction, would like to hear the presidential aspirants discuss their plans to check the problem if elected. The candidates should never ignore this isisue
Drug trafficking is an abominable crime. It is connected to other crimes listed in our Revised Penal Code, crimes that disrupt the lives of Filipinos as they do in other parts of the world.
