EDITORIAL: Back to MECQ

The lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic remain fresh in our minds: vigilance saves lives, and health precautions are not optional—they are essential. Now, as the specter of Mpox looms over the Davao Region, the public must act swiftly and responsibly to prevent its spread.

The recent confirmation of an Mpox case in Barangay Kinuban, Maco, Davao de Oro, and the monitoring of another suspected case in Nabunturan signal a clear warning: this virus is here, and it must not be taken lightly. Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, is a highly infectious disease that can lead to painful rashes, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. It spreads through close physical contact and contaminated surfaces—just as Covid-19 did.

Health authorities are urging the community to reinstate the protective measures that once shielded us from Covid-19’s relentless grip. Mask up, wash your hands frequently, practice physical distancing, ensure proper ventilation, and sanitize frequently touched objects—these are proven defenses against viral transmission. The Department of Health-Davao (DOH-Davao) has issued these guidelines, and they must be followed with absolute diligence.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, local authorities have swiftly taken action. Regional Trial Court 11 in Davao City has enforced a strict “No Face Mask, No Entry” policy, ensuring that all personnel and visitors adhere to safety protocols. Davao del Sur Governor Yvonne Cagas has issued an executive order mandating the wearing of face masks in enclosed spaces, public transport, and crowded outdoor areas. Other LGUs, including Compostela in Davao de Oro and Davao Oriental, have reinforced similar measures.

These policies are not mere formalities—they are necessary interventions to protect lives. The public must comply, not just to abide by regulations, but to prevent Mpox from escalating into a full-blown crisis. Complacency breeds consequences, and inaction is no longer an option.

The time to act is now. Our collective vigilance determines the course of this outbreak—either we contain it swiftly, or we allow its spread to endanger our communities. We have the knowledge, the experience, and the tools to prevent another health emergency. Let’s use them wisely.
