EDITORIAL: Aviation safety still a concern

It is very saddening to see images of the final moments of the ill-fated Air India flight near Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. Just when people around the world begin to regain the momentum to travel again after the lockdowns of the pandemic a couple of years back, these aviation-related incidents are just too worrisome to ignore.

The recent surge in aviation incidents, including the tragic Air India crash, has reignited concerns about air travel safety. With at least eight commercial aircraft accidents and a total of 49 aviation-related crashes reported this year, resulting in over 250 fatalities, the aviation industry faces urgent questions about safety protocols, aircraft maintenance, and regulatory oversight.

While air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation, these alarming statistics highlight the need for continuous improvements in safety measures. Every aviation accident demands a thorough investigation, not only to determine its cause but to ensure that lessons are learned and future disasters are prevented. Aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and regulatory bodies must work together to identify potential vulnerabilities—whether in maintenance procedures, pilot readiness, or aircraft design. Transparency in these investigations is crucial to maintaining public trust in the aviation industry.

Regulators must also step up their vigilance. Routine inspections, stricter compliance measures, and real-time monitoring of aircraft performance should be strengthened. Airlines, too, must prioritize safety over cost-cutting measures, ensuring that their fleets are properly maintained and their crews receive continuous training to handle emergencies effectively.

Let’s face it, passengers place their lives in the hands of aviation professionals every time they board a flight. It is the industry’s responsibility to uphold the highest safety standards, not just in response to accidents but as a constant, unwavering commitment.

Air travel connects the world, but that connection must be built on a foundation of trust, accountability, and an uncompromising dedication to safety.
