Envision having photography as a childhood hobby while aspiring to become a lawyer in the future. However, destiny took a different turn, leading you to a career in the hospitality sector.
This is the story of Wilfredo Paolo M. Rosello. He has never looked back on that decision with regret. In fact, he finds joy in his current profession and does not contemplate any other path that would fulfill his creative aspirations.
“Growing up, my dream was to become a lawyer. However, at some point, I discovered my passion for hospitality marketing and the creative industry. It is difficult to envision pursuing any other career now,” he says.
Currently, he holds the position of Cluster Marketing Manager for Swissotel Clark and Widus Hotel Clark, both located in Clark, Pampanga. His role involves overseeing and coordinating the marketing strategies of both hotels to ensure a cohesive brand identity and a strong market presence.
“My daily routine blends creativity with strategy,” he explains. “I manage a team that brings campaigns to fruition, encompassing everything from digital storytelling to live experiences. I develop marketing strategies, forge partnerships, and collaborate closely with various departments to guarantee that every guest interaction embodies the brand. Whether it involves launching a campaign, directing a photoshoot, or brainstorming with the team, I ensure that all our outputs resonate with people in a significant manner.”
He has been residing in Clark for approximately seven months now. Nonetheless, he has over eight years of expertise in hospitality marketing. “This change has been incredibly exciting,” he notes. “Clark possesses a distinctive energy, and participating in its growing tourism industry renders the work both dynamic and inspiring.”
This author met Paolo when he was still studying at the Ateneo de Davao University, where he took a course on journalism. I was one of those who evaluated their output for the Ateneo Gawad Pluma Awards.
“Mass Communication is an incredibly versatile course that gave me a strong foundation in storytelling, strategy, and audience engagement,” he admits. “It made my transition from student to professional much smoother because it’s grounded in real-world applications.”
An alternative method of communication is through photography. “Photography trains you to appreciate beauty in detail and narrates stories through visuals,” he states.
In a way, photography significantly aids him in his current profession. “In marketing, that viewpoint is priceless,” he says. “Photography enables me to devise better campaigns, manage shoots effectively, and guarantee that every visual asset connects emotionally with our audience. It also provides me with a practical advantage when creating content.”
Paolo recalls that his passion for photography began in his childhood. “My mother gave me my first Kodak camera when I was about 8 or 9 years old,” he shares. “From that point, I became involved in and competed in photojournalism, which greatly influenced my storytelling abilities. It taught me how to capture meaningful moments, not merely images, a lesson I carry with me to this day.”
Following his college education, he embarked on a professional photography career, which ultimately led him to an events and production company. “That experience introduced me to various creative fields such as graphic design, layouts, and video editing,” he explains. “As time passed, I evolved into a versatile multimedia artist. In my present position, this enables me to adopt a more comprehensive approach to content creation and campaign implementation.”
Following his graduation from college, he began his career at the Pearl Farm Beach Resort located in Samal City in 2018. He reflects, “It was there that I first encountered authentic Filipino hospitality at its best. Beyond the exceptional facilities, it was the warmth and sincerity of the staff that truly impressed me. This experience taught me that outstanding service is fundamentally based on genuine human connections.”
In 2020, he transitioned to a role as the sales and marketing manager at Waterfront Davao. “This position was pivotal in the development of my leadership abilities,” he remarks. “I came to understand the significance of cultivating a robust team culture, nurturing trust, and establishing meaningful relationships not only with guests but also among team members. For me, leadership is about motivating individuals and helping them realize their full potential.”
Eventually, Paolo ventured abroad to the Bahamas. “It all began one evening when I casually responded to a job advertisement, and within a week, I received an offer,” he recounts. “It was one of those moments where I thought, ‘Why not take a chance?’
“Working in the Bahamas was a transformative experience, providing me with global exposure and a deeper insight into the hospitality sector,” he adds. “Although I initially faced culture shock, it compelled me to adapt swiftly and grow in unexpected ways.”
He spent approximately seven months working on-site in the Bahamas and remained with the company for a total of two years, serving as their online digital marketing manager.
“Although the experience was profoundly fulfilling, I came to understand that hospitality, whether at a local or international level, is governed by the same fundamental principles,” he says.
He ultimately decided to return to the Philippines “because I had faith in the potential of our tourism sector and I aspired to contribute to its development,” he remarks.
Paolo has indeed gone a long, long way. He and his siblings were raised in Davao City. “We are all boys, and I am the third in the family,” he shares. “During my childhood, I was quite shy and found it difficult to engage with others, making it somewhat ironic that I now pursuing a profession centered on connection. This is something I genuinely appreciate and enjoy today.”
He recalls it was not an easy transition for him to leave the city where he learned to walk, captured photographs as a child, and completed his college education. “One of the most notable challenges was relocating from my hometown, which required not only logistical adjustments but also cultural ones,” he clarifies. “Building a new network from scratch, especially with media and industry collaborators, required significant time and effort. Nevertheless, these challenges have played a crucial role in my growth, both professionally and personally.”
At this point in his life, he is able to unwind and appreciate life.
“Pursue what ignites your passion,” he urges. “Select a direction that resonates with you, rather than one that merely appears impressive on paper. Be bold enough to take risks, even when it feels daunting. True growth arises from such experiences. Additionally, keep in mind that there is always an opportunity to begin anew. Every obstacle is a component of the journey, and in this field, genuine passion and authenticity will consistently be recognized.”
