EVENT: The country’s first Vineyard Harvest Festival

Last week, I received an invitation via my social media from Jennifer M. Taglucop, a travel agent based in Torres Street. I have known her personally since I got my travel insurance from her during my recent trip to the United States.

The invitation was one I could not refuse. After all, I had been eager to witness such an event. I am referring to A Walk in the Clouds, the 1995 Hollywood film. It narrates the story of Paul Sutton (portrayed by Keanu Reeves) who becomes involved with a young woman named Victoria Aragon (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon). What made the film captivating was the traditional grape harvesting process in Napa Valley, which showcases the winemaking industry and the cultural importance of grape farming.

Another contest: fastest grape harvest challenge.

Now, you understand the essence. “Step into the vineyard and experience the joy of the harvest — pick grapes straight from the vines and take part in the traditional grape stomping, the timeless ritual that begins the journey from vine to wine,” the invitation stated.

With such enticing insights, who would decline such an invitation? I was delighted to have attended the Harvest Festival, the first of its kind in the Philippines, which was held at Taglucop Estate Vineyard and Winery in Tacunan, Davao City.

I first became aware of this vineyard during an interview with its owner, Atty. Ferdinand Taglucop, several years ago for a magazine. He grows grapes because he believes that the Philippines has the potential to be a significant source of wine. In fact, he aims to place the Philippines on the global wine map.

“This just used to be a dream by me and my wife, Jenny,” said the lawyer who is the head of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Davao Chapter, in his opening speech. “This event is very special to us because we only invite the very closest of our family.”

Atty. Ferdinand Taglucop welcomed the guests and visitors.

He went on to say: “I know we still have a lot to do but we just opened this Harvest Festival for you to know that we are here, we are doing something for you.”

Numerous activities were organized that enhanced the festivities. These included a barrel rolling relay, a fastest grape harvest challenge, a vineyard putting challenge, and the last glass standing competition.

However, the most captivating event was the traditional grape stomping. If it was hot during the day, the evening was even more spectacular as it was already cooler.

With lights twinkling all around and music playing under the vineyard sky, it was truly a remarkable experience.
