Why Margie didn’t push thru with candidacy

In the run-up to the deadline for  filing of certificate of candidacy for those seeking positions in the 2010 elections, Ms Margie Moran-Floirendo, former Miss Universe, and better half of former Rep. Antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo, confirmed that she was indeed planning to run for governor of Davao del Norte, currently occupied by Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario, brother of her mother-in-law and uncle of husband Tonyboy.
Suddenly in the vesper of the last day of filing, Ms Moran announced she was withdrawing from the race.
Following is her official statement on the matter:
“Last week, I was asked to run for the position of governor of Davao del Norte. I expressed my excitement and enthusiasm because I was ready and very qualified to be the province’s executive. I have come prepared for it, having finished a master degree in managing rural development. I have been active in the last 10 years as a member of the boards of Habitat for humanity, Mindanao Commission on Women, Save Davao Gulf and Davao Gulf  Management Council. I presented myself as one with vast experiences in shelter needs, rural and urban economic enterprise, environment and climate change, women, peace and arts and culture. I was confident that I could have put up a good fight to bring about changes in governance by offering fresh leadership to improve the quality of people’s lives to help them have better control over their environment, resources and destinies.
“After much thought and consideration, the Roxas-Moran family has prevailed over me to desist from pursuing my plans so not be caught in the midst of a family feud that may conclude to a bitter end. There is much more at stake than what I imagined. Above all, I felt that by running, I would participate in being part of a political dynasty and patronage that is so much abhorred today post Maguindanao tragedy.
“I have learned some lessons though: that to be able to reach political maturity, the young leaders of today must be given the greatest opportunity to be skilled in leadership so they may become competent to govern our province. I was a president of my college’s student council and I know that that experience honed me as a leader. Hence, the advocacy I will pursue is to polish these talents in others so that sons and daughters of farmers, market vendors, government and corporate workers will have an equal chance to run for public office as sons and daughters of today’s public officials. This will be my next mission.
“I am proud to say that I am what I am because of what I have made myself to be and I am sad that I was not given the chance to serve. But one day if I am again given the option to serve, I hope you will appreciate my qualifications and what I have to offer, over and above my affinity to a political family.
“I thank everyone, particularly the various organizations who have come forward to volunteer to campaign for me. I thank former Congressman Tonyboy Floirendo for believing I could run for public office and be competent as a leader and I thank all my friends and relatives who I know that when push comes to shove, they will be with me..
“Lastly, I have great faith in the leadership of Congressman Anton Lagdameo. He is young, competent and committed to the party. He will ensure that all the candidates of Lakas will get the support they need so that the changes that they need to introduce will ensue.
“I know that I a much more important mission to accomplish in this lifetime but service to the public is what I will always do as a development and humanitarian worker.
“To all the media, candidates and my friends thank you for granting me this audience.”
