Cotabato Governor Emmylou Mendoza has issued a memorandum prohibiting all offices and departments of the Provincial Capitol from engaging with, entering into agreements with, or accepting any form of assistance, sponsorship, or donations from the tobacco industry and its affiliated companies.
The directive reinforces the provincial government’s commitment to protecting public health by preventing tobacco industry interference in government programs and policies.
The memorandum is anchored on Republic Act No. 9211, or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003; the Civil Service Commission and Department of Health Memorandum Circular No. 2010-01; the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC); and Provincial Ordinance No. 497, also known as the Tobacco Control Ordinance of Cotabato Province.
Mendoza said these laws and policies promote a 100 percent tobacco industry interference-free, smoke-free environment, prohibit tobacco advertising, and restrict access to tobacco products throughout the province.
She added that the provincial government remains steadfast in prioritizing the health and welfare of Cotabateños over the interests of the tobacco industry.
“Sama-sama nating itaguyod ang isang Cotabato na hindi kailanman bibigay sa impluwensya ng industriya ng tabako—isang lalawigang inuuna ang buhay, kalusugan, at kinabukasan ng bawat mamamayan,” Mendoza said.
She also called on government employees, local officials, and the public to support the province’s tobacco control efforts in creating healthier communities for future generations.
Mendoza said the memorandum forms part of the province’s continuing campaign to strengthen tobacco control measures, safeguard public institutions from tobacco industry influence, and promote a healthier, smoke-free Cotabato for all residents.
