Urbanisimo – To Davao and beyond

by Kenneth Ong

WE, Dabawenyos, are a creative bunch, especially when it comes to designs that are at par with, if not better than what the rest of the world has to offer. SM City Davao recognizes that and just recently paid tribute to the multi-awarded, world-class jewelry and furniture designer, Ann Pamintuan and Mindanao’s Fashion Czar, Boy Guinoo with its staging of the third Fashion Edge.
Known for her creative and innovative use of metal and electroplating, Ann has created a look all her own. Fusing the organic with metal, she provides a fresh and modern perspective that symbolizes the balance between Davao City’s modernism and the city’s respect for the environment it thrives in.
Fashion Edge featured Davao’s elite designers Aztec Barba, Garimon Roferos, Dodjie Batu, Emi Alexander Englis and Popoy Barba, who each showcased their winning pieces from both local and international fashion design competitions. Their designs highlighted each designer’s innovation, skill and craftsmanship that made a mark in the international runways.
Also to be noted are the works of ten of Davao’s young designers, among them are Edgar Buyan, Don Mascariñas, Joao Tarepe, Manny Diparine, Winston Mira, Frida Cabille, who are also winners of past Urog Etnika, Moda Mindanao and Sagala competitions. Their creations were accented by Ann Pamintuan’s fabulous jewelry creations giving a breath of fresh air to the runway. I am glad that the future of fashion in Davao is evolving faster than ever, and with inspiration from Dabawenyo designers like Ann, I am looking at tomorrow with more excitement then ever.
