THE food business seems to be the most resilient sector even in the midst of an economic crisis. Proof of this is the opening last July 21 of the 6th and newest Red Ribbon store at the NCCC Mall Davao City.
Selling an unbelievable number of cakes in just one day has proven to be a learning and winning experience for Red Ribbon franchisee Wilson Bangayan, who with his wife Jenny, simultaneously opened three Red Ribbon stalls in Victoria Plaza, NCCC and Gaisano Mall in 2006.
“I never expected I can sell so much cake in a day I even hired a container to put the cakes in a cooler,” Wilson Bangayan said.
That was the first December experience of Bangayan as a Red Ribbon franchisee. Today, Bangayan has opened his 6th Red Ribbon store, which is actually the second full service food store in Davao aside from the one in SM City Davao. All these outlets are under the RC Kevin Food Venture Corporation.
Bangayan decided to expand on the number of Red Ribbon stores in the city because aside from enjoying brisk sales and full acceptance from the Dabawenyos, he has enjoyed full support from the company.
Red Ribbon was acquired by Jollibee Foods Corporation in 2005, and has since then, enjoyed brisk growth with over 200 stores in the Philippines and 25 stores in the United States.
The opening of the Red Ribbon full service store at the NCCC Mall is doubly significant because it is the first time (in Davao City) for the brand to sport a new design and look
“The look mirrors Red Ribbon’s goal for innovation; innovating new food and new taste,” Bangayan said.
Michelle Leslie Llanos, Red Ribbon VisMin Operations head, said they want more food stores in Davao to make Red Ribbon more visible in the city. She said Red Ribbon has a great potential for growth especially in the city, as it caters to the A and B market. However, she said, even the market demographics is erased once people try the Red Ribbon cakes.
She said Red Ribbon is targeting more food stores in Cebu and Zamboanga, and food stalls in Zamboanga and Iloilo by end of the year. They are targeting five full stores and five stalls in the VisMin area by next year.
Bangayan said all his Red Ribbon stores are performing very well since their cakes have become a part of every Dabawenyo celebration.
Red Ribbon in Davao already has a full commissary to service all the six outlets so consumers are assured of fresh cakes everyday. “We maintain a food service quality because the Jollibee Group puts a lot of value in the quality and freshness of its cakes and other food products,” he said.
Bangayan said that in any Red Ribbon outlets, you are assured of only a three-day display window life for their cakes. After that period, the cake is donated to several accredited charity organizations.
Red Ribbon is going for the Filipino palate and so it has introduced two new cake products that are close to the hearts of every Filipino. These are the Halo-Halo Rolls and the Choc-Nut Roll.
The Red Ribbon food store at NCCC also offer light meals like the Salisbury Steak which is a plateful of mouth-watering soft mashed potato, all-beef steak and mixed veggies, Palabok and Creamy Carbonara.
Red Ribbon Cakes are not cheap by any standard, and are in fact priced 10% higher than their competitors. However, factor in the freshness and quality of their products and you will realize how affordable they are.
As Bangayan said, “when you tasted red ribbon, the price will not even matter.’ [Lovely A. Carillo]
