Magic Competitions in the past have been made but none has done a more organized effort like the Illusive Search for Magikerong Pilipino. The organizer of the search exerted strenuous effort to travel to Mindanao and Visayas to conduct Regional Searches to find winners to compete on the first ever national competition of skilled magicians from the whole country.
One of the two Regional searches for Mindanao was done last August 19 at CAP Auditorium, here in Davao City. It was one of the numerous events to celebrate the Kadayawan Festival of the city. GINO ALONZO JANDUCAYAN won as the Regional Champion and was tasked to compete on the national competition at Philam Theater, UN Ave., Manila. Sheena May Tan won the search done in Zamboanga, and was the lone lady contender of the competition. She was undoubtedly another pride of Mindanao.
GINO has no doubt made Davao City proud for he emerged “almost champion” on the said national search for skilled magicians. He lost by a very thin margin of less than 1% (0.05% to be exact) to Teddy Rodas of Manila. Interestingly the criterion of audience impact has work against GINO who garnered the highest score on skill from all the judges. Nonetheless, GINO deserved to be acknowledged and duly recognized by us, Dabawenyos. I am sure you will agree with me, that to us he is the champion, though he was declared the 1st Runner-up.
GINO’s interest in magic was influenced by his older brother Omar. As the youngest in his brood, the work of his older siblings as performing artists in different fields has inspired him. He started performing magic when he was just 11 years old. Becoming one of the finalists on the first Philippine open stage magic competition last 2008, has not only honed his skill in competing but has really challenged him to win. GINO has spent exhausting hours of rehearsing his act for the competition. His nephew and nieces has commented that they go to bed leaving GINO rehearsing and woke up seeing him rehearsing again, so he may not be doing anything else with his time but spending it on his rehearsals.
Needless to say that the skills he developed from the hard work he put in; has perfected his act that ensures wonderment and awesome entertainment. His magic act is surely something to watch and very unfortunate to miss. His skillful acts specialize on swift production of doves from nowhere and amazing and difficult card tricks.
