If haven’t already noticed lately, tributes to the past are becoming fashion’s new currency. Finding continuity and inspiration in the works of past masters is a practice that proves that something mind-jarringly fabulous never goes out of style. In Freeway’s 4th edition of their National Artist Collectors series, the intricate workmanship of National Artist for Fashion Ramon Valera takes front and center. In 2006, this man was the first fashion designer to be bestowed with the National Artist award for Fashion. Back in his heyday between the 1930’s and 1960’s, he was best known for dressing illustrious clientele such as First Ladies Aurora Quezon and Imelda Marcos. His legendary works predominantly in gowns and ternos were much celebrated and so was his revolutionizing of our national costume. According to WikiPilipinas, Valera introduced the idea of making it a one-piece ensemble and doing away with the traditional tapis and panuelo. Such important claims to fame make Valera’s works of hushed yet outstanding opulence and regal silhouettes pieces that shouldn’t be left to the archives alone.
Freeway’s re-imagining of Valera’s works is seen executed in a number of ways in their woven dresses, tunics, blouses and graphic tees. The dressier pieces show the designer’s penchant for beadwork and embroidery such as his intricate sun patterns. His sure-stroked sketches are the focal points in their blouses and tent dresses. Onto their graphic tees achieved through sublimation printing are digital renderings of his elaborate beadwork. Capturing the essence of Valera’s work is thoughtfully done here and the limited edition collection is an all-inclusive one that makes use of his many artistic facets. Showing that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery when done right, Freeway’s current showing is a lesson in old-world mastery given a modern medium for the appreciation of a whole new audience on fashion revelers.
The National Artist Collectors Series of Freeway featuring Ramon Valera is locally available in Chimes Specialty Store, Governor Sales Street, Davao City. Visit http://www.freeway.net.ph for more news and updates.
