Confessions of a Partyphile – Drink up

by Zhaun Ortega

Partying and drinking come had in hand like salt and pepper or tequila and lemons. Filipinos have developed its own culture when it comes to drinking that is a very good representation of the Pinoy party ideals. Reigning in the following list is the most convenient drink of all. It is easy, tastes good, and has no frills; just like the Pinoy party goer. Here are the top ten bar drinks in the Philippines:
10The Weng Weng
This Filipino cocktail contains Vodka, Tequila, Brandy, Bourbon, Whiskey, Rum, Orange Juice, Pine Apple Juice, and Grenadine and is the namesake of its creator, a Filipino chef. It has become wildly popular in the country for its potency. Trust me; a pitcher of this is as good as a death sentence. This is the cocktail of choice for hard-drinkers in disguise.
9The Zombie
Although this cocktail looks festive and flirty, it is really potent and packs a huge punch. Made with three types of rum, orange juice, cherry brandy, and grenadine, this fabulously pink cocktail seems innocently girly, but can get your drink in no time.
8Tonic with Gin or Vodka
If you are looking for a common and traditional drink available in every bar, you can opt for tonic with gin or vodka. This is the perfect drink for any season, and any time. To get the flavor, mix tonic with gin or vodka. If you want, you can also garnish the drink with some lime.
7Mojito
The Mojito is a refreshing cocktail with white rum, lime, and mint. This Cuban cocktail is popular among bars from Alaska to Zimbabwe, and everywhere else in between! Although it seems light and fizzy, this drink actually packs quite a punch. More importantly, it is the drink of choice for partyphiles who love sun-worshipping by the beach. A glass of Mojito reminds everyone of summer; and this is why it made the top ten list of the best bar drinks in the ever-sunny Philippines.
6Martini
This has got to be the most popular cocktail of all time; thanks to James Bond. But unlike his preferred Martini, the classic cocktail now comes in so many exciting flavours that make even younger drinkers take notice. From apple pie martinis to chocolate martinis, to iced teanis; the simple martini has now come a long way and is cemented in bar menus around the country.
5Vodka- Sprite
This simple, fizzy drink takes the fifth spot because it is relatively simple, it tastes familiar, and people know exactly what to expect when they order this. More importantly, it does not cost as much as other cocktails.
4Rum-Cola
Because the Philippine nightscape is relatively young, and people are not yet very experimental with drinks, they often gravitate to familiar flavours. Rum Cola is definitely simple, familiar tasting, and easy on the budget. More importantly, it is easy to make on your own, as all it requires is for the bartender to combine rum with coke in proportions in accordance to his taste. This makes it popular around the country and lands on the fourth spot.
3Ready-to-Drink Alcohol Mixes
Ready to drink cocktails are starting to pop up in every other bar in the country; and they are even starting to make an appearance in the humble sari-sari store. Popular alcohol mixes include Tanduay Ice, Gilbey’s Premium Strength, Mudslide, Vodka Cruisers, Erg, and a whole lot more. Tthese pre-mixed, ready-to-drink cocktails are easy on the budget and taste great.
2Margarita
Margarita, one of the most popular cocktail drinks, is available in different variations. Conventionally, Margarita is known to be a cocktail of orange liquor, lime juice and tequila. Yet, there are other variations like blue margarita, blue lagoon margarita, apple margarita, coco margarita, mango margarita, red margarita, lychee margarita and many more.
1Beer
Icy cold beer with white foam on its top is undoubtedly one of the most popular bar drinks across the globe. Though drinks made with beer are not classified as cocktails, it enjoys popularity in almost every bar. This golden ale is still the favorite drink among partyphiles around the globe. Enter any bar in the Philippines, and you are bound to be greeted by a crowd of beer drinkers, any day. This is enough for the lowly lager to garner the top spot on the list.
