Style Scribe – Oscar’s ladies

by Nikki Gotianse-Tan

The Annual Academy Awards, or more popularly known as the Oscars, is Hollywood’s night of nights. It is also fashion’s, as far as high-wattage celebrity dressing is concerned. Such is this air of heady anticipation and palpable excitement that surrounds the Oscars, where the looks – the gowns, the jewels and the coiffures – are expected to shine as brightly as the statuettes and the night’s winners.  And on this stellar event, all roads lead to that red carpet and all eyes are trained on who is wearing what. It makes even the most amateur of us go from mere spectators with live coverage to hard-to-please critics.
Here is part two of some ladies who were in attendance that night whose looks I thought deserved some glowing commendation, a special mention or just a straight-up bad review:
Reese Witherspoon in Armani Privé. She was obviously aiming for something old Hollywood with the cat eyes and the bouffant. But since her overall look was strongly reminiscent of Julia Roberts’ 2001 Oscars look when she wore a black and white vintage Valentino and because she doesn’t hold a candle to Julia, this look was really not for her. Bring back the Reese that wore those amazing Nina Ricci gowns a few years back.
Sandra Bullock in Vera Wang. For me, Bullock always walked that fine line between looking youthful and overly mature. I thought her look in last year’s Oscars and this year’s Golden Globes did great things for her and made her look like a real star. This red Vera Wang looks a little too studied and safe but it does make her look tidy and lovely.
Hilary Swank in Gucci Premiere. This nude beaded Gucci gown with plumes makes Swank look very flirty and feminine. This alone makes me applaud the two-time Oscar winner for her gown choice.
Camila Alves in Kaufman Franco. She has always been known as Matthew McConaughey’s better half. But in this modern black ball gown, people certainly took notice of her and will surely remember her name and her dusky beauty from now on.
Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein. Designer darling Paltrow showed up in this shimmery sheath by American designer Calvin Klein. The nude hue made her look a little washed out and I didn’t care much for the Louis Vuitton brooch that she fashioned as a belt. I much preferred the Michael Kors gown she wore during her performance and to the after parties. That gown achieved the desired sparkly effect that they were aiming for.
