Ballet Philippines, the country’s premiere professional ballet and contemporary dance company, will perform modern and classical ballet works at SM Lanang Premier on Saturday, October 6, 2012. The show “Ballet Philippines at SM Lanang Premier” will be performed at 5 o’clock in the afternoon at the Mall Atrium.
BP brings the best of its repertoire to the South. This repertoire includes “Battle of the Sexes,” the winning piece at the First Choreographers’ Cup held at the CCP last year. Choreographed by Don Obviar, the piece is about the struggle for dominance between the two sexes, shown through inventive use of lifts and male-female partnering.
Alden Lugnasin is also contributing his “Lahat ng Araw” and “Half Past Dead” to the show. The former is a four-man dance to the classic Filipino song of the same title. The men, bare-chested and wearing only a red ruffled skirt, use a large red fan quite ingeniously, and show their manliness through the seemingly feminine outfit and props. “Half Past Dead” on the other hand, is a strong male solo which was the competition piece of soloist Cyril Fallar at the recently concluded Korea International Modern Dance Competition, where he was a semi-finalist.
“Kadena de Amor” is artistic director Paul Alexander Morales’ revival for BP’s season opener. Danced to the alternative music of the all-girl Filipino band Chain Gang, it shows the dynamics of different relationships through contact partnering.
BP will also showcase their strength in classical ballet with excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty. Dances from the full-length ballet’s Third Act include “Jewels,” “White Cat” and the bravura “Bluebird Pas de Deux.”
To top off the show, BP is performing the work of Davao’s own Agnes Locsin. “Magkaugnay” is about the interconnectedness of life and all beings on Earth. Using the music of Joey Ayala, Locsin makes her case with her Neo-Ethnic style of dance as the dancers weave in and out in solos and small groups until they finally connect together and dance in perfect unison.
The official carrier of Ballet Philippines is Air Asia. Air Asia flies daily to Davao from DMIA, Clark. For more of BP’s performances, please visit www.ballet.ph.
