Malacca: relaxed and artsy at the Settlement

With its rich and colourful history, Malacca is one of Malaysia’s most historic cities earning for it a spot in the UNESCO World Heritage list. A rich and prosperous international trading port for spices, porcelain, tea and silk, Malacca was a jewel in the eyes of its Portuguese, Dutch and Biritsh colonisers, all of whom left imprints of different influences of architecture in buildings throughout Malacca.
Drawing inspiration from the rich mix of cultures, the Settlement Hotel Melaka which I called home while I was visiting Malacca offers guests to the quaint 45-room boutique hotel a unique stay.
Located on the fringe of the city’s Portuguese Settlement along Jalan Ujong Pasir, the hotel ,which once used to be a 1960’s 4 storey government building, is now a beautifully designed building with various artwork and centuries-old wooden day beds and artefacts located around the hotel.
All of The Settlement’s 45 rooms are well-appointed with deluxe beds, 40-inch LCD TV as well as a spectacular bathroom with toiletries specially made by L’occitane and a fabulous free-standing bathtub. But while the rooms of the Settlement were wonderful, the four wooden Malay villas that are located at the hotel’s well-manicured garden area give guests a truly Malaysian village experience with traditional a Malay bath and a beautiful four-poster king sized bed completing the experience.
