I was recently invited experience such a trip by the Department of Tourism Region 11 last week. Dubbed the Davao Food Trip and Walking Tour, the jaunt aims to feature Durainburg’s downtown core as well as food discoveries at the nearby Bankerohan Market.
The tour group which was led by Travel Teller and resource person, Olan Emboscado, started out in front of Davao City Hall. From there we walked and explored the nearby Sangguniang Panglungsod, Osmeña Park, Centennial Park and the iconic San Pedro Cathedral. We also stopped by the Museo Dabawenyo to learn more about the people of the City as well as its colourful history through dioramas and collected artefacts.
From the museum, we took the Visit Davao Dun Sale jeepney and headed towards Bangkerohan Market were we continued our tour, exploring the fruit section as well as the flower section of Davao’s largest market. We sampled a few of the market’s fresh fruits in season as well as native chocolate, kinutil (an invigorating mix of native chocolate, native chicken egg, and coconut wine), and Puto Maya (sticky rice cooked with coconut), at Del Mar Painitan which was located nearby.
With the noon day sun beating down, the tour ended at Claude’s Cafe de Ville to cool down and have a proper lunch. Situated at one of Davao’s most prominent historical houses, Claude’s Cafe de Ville is a definite go-to place for anyone on a food trip with its beautiful art deco interiors enhancing the French dining experience.
Although I do live in the vicinity of downtown Davao, it was fun to explore the many nooks and crannies which I would just pass by on a normal working day and I would highly recommend it to everyone.
