“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” That was what the beloved John, the apostle of Jesus Christ, wrote in his book (John 3:16).
The verse that many Christians have committed to memory encapsulates the core message of the Holy Bible. It offers humanity the promise of salvation, as the Messiah sacrificed Himself for our sins to rescue us from eternal damnation.
In addition, John 3:16 sets the stage for the joyous celebration of Christmas, the most delightful season of the year.
Many Filipinos, along with those who regard Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, eagerly await this time. Notably, the Philippines is known for celebrating the longest Christmas season in the world, beginning its observance of His birth as early as September.
Christmas has many symbols. And one of the most enduring is the Christmas tree. Some stories said that the tree was the source of the lumber that was used when Jesus Christ was crucified at Calvary.
The tradition of using evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to represent eternal life can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Not too many know that tree worship was prevalent among pagan Europeans and continued even after their conversion to Christianity.
The modern Christmas tree, however, has its roots in western Germany. A significant element of a well-known medieval play depicting Adam and Eve was the “paradise tree,” a fir adorned with apples, symbolizing the Garden of Eden.
In the past, old folks used candles to light the Christmas tree. The light, as everyone now knows, represents Jesus Christ. But in the modern world, instead of candles, Christmas lights are already used to light the Christmas tree.
Last November 8, the Panorama Summit Hotel had its lights added glow over its Christmas tree and the façade of the hotel.
“The light of the tree symbolizes the incredible love and graceful savior Jesus Christ,” said Linda Castañeda, president of Panorama Summit Hotel, in her message. “This season invites us to reflect on this miraculous birth and gift that changed the world forever. There’s no other birthday that is more significant than His. For it represents the gift of love and redemption. Christmas is a time for sharing and giving. A time to open our hearts to one another.”
In her special message during the lighting, Director Tanya Rabat-Tan of the Department of Tourism reminded everyone: “In this season of giving, may we cherish moments and loved ones, and extend our kindness to those in need. Let us share the joy, hope and peace of Christmas.”
During the aforementioned special event, Dr. Michael T. Manalaysay presented a brief address. He is the founder of Anak Kaugmaon Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization formed by Southern Philippines Medical Center–Department of Pediatrics. The hotel is partnering with the said organization.
The musical accompaniment for the event was supplied by Extra CurriChorale. Pianist Emmanuel Ken Gonzales performed a selection of special Christmas music for the occasion. The rhythm and energy were contributed by the Tribu K’ Mindanawon Dancers and Drum Beaters.
