My Scene: Making a quick jaunt to Taipei memorable

One of the largest and oldest temples in Taiwan is the Longshan Temple. Take in the sights, scents, and sounds — intricate carvings, vibrant decor, rituals, chantings, and incense-burning. Be respectful by dressing appropriately, keeping noise to a minimum, and observing local customs.

Venture beyond the city to Jiufen Old Street, allegedly the inspiration of the film Spirited Away. Its winding alleys are lined with red lanterns, food stalls, teahouses, and shops of all kinds. Take in the ocean view, buy souvenirs, sample the tasty food, and enjoy aromatic brews at authentic teahouses.

Visit the whimsical Green Fantasy Forest with its many picturesque spots, and Yehliu Geopark for the Queen’s Head and other graceful rock formations. Have your photo taken at a cherry blossom park set against the setting sun.

Accommodations range from budget hostels to luxe hotels. For a grand finale, stay at the iconic Grand Hotel Taipei with its traditional Chinese architecture and charm, making it a landmark hotel frequented by tourists.

Taipei has so much more to offer, but it will be a quick excursion with a short stay. I came with my daughter Kyra, my nieces and their friends. We made it a point to savor the local cuisine at authentic Taiwanese restaurants, night market food stalls, and even 7-11 stores (with lots to offer!). These made our four days in Taipei a happy and unforgettable trip.
