The Department of Agriculture has assured that the Davao region will continue to experience stable rice supply despite the rice crisis in the country.
“So far in Davao region, we have not yet seen any complaints or whatsoever in the food and rice supply in the region,” Chief Information Officer Noel Provido Provido said in an interview with Edge Davao.
He also said that DA is closely coordinating with the National Food Authority and other concerned agencies in ensuring the stability of rice supply in the region.
Last week, a state of calamity has been declared in Zamboanga City and Basilan, where rice prices have gone up to as high as P70 a kilo.
“So far, it has not reached on that level unlike in other regions. We are still in the line of P50 per kilo,”Provido said.
He cited the fact that the region has not experiaence any weather disturbances that affects the production and distribution of rice.
The DA officers then assured that they will intensify further the price monitoring in the market to assure that there will be no price surge brought by rice hoarding caused by manipulating traders.
In the long term action, Provido said that improvements in irrigations must be addressed to further increase the production of rice in the country.
“Other than irrigation, to reduce to losses, we are also giving post-harvest technology,” He added, “Because infrastructure and mechanization is the way to go in order to avoid shortage.”
