Flight of the Eagles ride slated Dec. 2

Environmental advocates are gearing up for the 15th Flight of the Eagles (FOTE), Davao’s annual 40-kilometer traditional cycling event slated on December 2, 2018 at the People’s Park in Davao City.

Dubbed, “Sikad sa Kinaiyahan: Baha Likayan, Salura ang Uwan”, a call for action to contribute in addressing the flooding concerns and the strict implementation of the Rainwater Harvesting Ordinance of Davao City.

Lemuel Manalo, Interface Development Interventions research specialist, told reporters on Monday during the weekly Kapehan sa Davao that the  Davao’s annual fun ride aims to raise funds for the sustainability of Adopt-a-site projects in Talomo-Lipadas, Daliaon, and Malagos watersheds as well as enhance public awareness on the importance of implementing the Davao City Bicycle Ordinance of 2010.

“The Bicycle Ordinance promotes cycling as a sustainable alternative means of transportation for Dabawenyos, knowing that Davao City already has a Bicycle Ordinance,”said Manalo.

“Since then the flight of the eagles biking event has been instrumental in promoting green initiative,” he added.

Monica Ayala, head of the Cycle for Life, on the same day, the 19th Tour of the Fireflies will conclude from its momentous tour from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao traversing Maharlika Highway then will proceed to the People’s Park to give way to the historical 15th Flight of the Eagles dubbed as “the Fireflies Meet the Eagles”.

“Both activities aim to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative means of zero-emission transportation in order to promote good air quality, health and fitness for residents of sustainable cities,” she added.

“The cycling event keeps the two easy meandering routes,” said Ayala.

Ayala added the event features the 15-kilometer Kalayaan route within the city road circuit at 6:00 AM and the 40-kilometer Pag-asa symbolic solidarity fun ride to Malagos Watershed Park at 7:00 AM. Both routes will start at People’s Park.

It features competitive junior aged 17 years old and below followed by Senior aged 19-30 years old and Veterans aged 31-39 years old, masters aged 40 years old and above, and Fat Boys Rider weighing 85 kilograms above and ladies category.

The Flight of the Eagles is organized by the Office of Councilor Abella, SIKAD Davao, Cycle for Life, watershed management youth council, DCWD and IDIS.
