The Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Sports Institute (PSC-PSI) awarded the Davao City government P4 million in cash incentives after placing fourth place in the overall category during the Philippine National Games (PNG) held in May.
The money was awarded by PSI Davao program officer Cholo Elegino to the city represented by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, City Administrator Zuleika Lopez and Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge Mikey Aportadera during the flag raising ceremony on Monday at the City Hall of Davao.
Elegino said that the incentive is awarded to local government units (LGUs) that place in the top five ranks overall during the PNG.
He also said that President Rodrigo Duterte, who was impressed during the opening ceremony, ordered to double the incentives from P2 million.
The 2018 PNG was hosted by Cebu last May 19-25, wherein 300 athletes from Davao City competed against 4,000 athletes from 145 LGUs.
The host LGU was named the overall champion.
In an interview, Aportadera said that they have yet to discuss as to how the cash incentive be distributed.
But prior to the awarding, he said that he suggested to the city administrator to prioritize the purchase of bus for use of the athletes during sports events.
“We had a talk with the city admin, that if ever we can purchase a bus that the athletes from Davao City could use during their trips in case there are sports events that the city will participate,” Aportadera said.
He also said that it would be cost-efficient rather than renting buses.
